Walking guide apps
by Lazlo Woodbine

I am considering purchasing one of these. The three I have seen are outdoor active, alltrails and komoot. Anyone know which is the best, best value. I mainly want it for walking in Europe rather than the UK where OS maps have always worked for me.

on 19/03/23 @ 16:45No need to pay for apps as all of them are based on the same data, so you may as well use free ones (or the ones with the layout that suits you best). I always used the map function in the windy app which is now run as stand-alone app by mapy.cz. You may recall that Jan and I did never got lost on the Menorca walk which is a good recommendation
FcFlat cap (Mike)Hi Doug, There is also the option of Cicerone guidebooks for walkers !
PhPhiltheetilerPhiltheetiler: I agree, I've got lots of the Cicerone guidebooks and I've always found them very useful
Do you want the walking routes added by users, or just a really good map app for use abroad?
If the latter I use OsmAND (Available for both Android and iOS) and paid for the the lifetime unlimited maps (not the pro version). You can get the 'two maps' version for free if you're happy to delete maps before downloading the next. The maps are off line which saved our bacon in many areas where there's no signal e.g. Aus and the USA. I have used it in the EU, AUS, USA, HK and China, and many places between. The best layout for hiking is here: https://github.com/OsmAnd-Rendering/Hiking/blob/main/README_EN.md see installation instructions.
