It depends on where you want to end up and at what times and days of the week that you can travel. Though Scotland has only a tenth of the population of England, surface area wise it is over 2/3 that of England, when you cross the border you've nearly another 100 miles to reach Glasgow or Edinburgh.
on 11/08/23 @ 21:51If there's enough to fill a car then that's probably the best. However, the cheapest way to travel is by the Megabus or another bus company, they take a long time so it's not the best way to travel, however they do go to quite a few destinations.
If you can vary your travel times and book far enough in advance the the train could be a better option, you can have a look at the Trainline site.
Ooops, I reached the limit for the number of characters!!
on 11/08/23 @ 21:55From where you are you could pick up the train at Peterborough, the East coast line goes through Edinburgh then cross country to Glasgow.
Not sure where you could pick up a bus as I've always driven or used the train
I hope all this helps and if you've any further questions then let me know.
Cheers, John.
ps sometimes the east coast line goes on up to Inverness passing though Aviemore for the Cairngorms
JohnH on 11/08/23 @ 21:57Thanks John I will look at the east coast line, we are going to Inverness ish, we are walking from Fort William - Inverness, not sure if going from mine or hers yet, depends on what we find
downtoearth65 on 12/08/23 @ 8:53Thank you for your help
No problem. When you get to Inverness if you have time try and visit the NTS exhibition at Culloden, it's really worth a visit.
JohnH on 12/08/23 @ 16:53I've cycled the Great Glen way from Fort William to Inverness, it's a brilliant route. It may have changed but when I did it there were few pubs or cafes on the route so be prepared to carry a lunch with you. Also, pre-book accommodation as it can be busy and again there's limited accommodation on some parts of the route.
Finally Harvey's publish a map which covers the whole route in sections. It's titled "Great Glen Way"
Hope this all helps, cheers, John.
We now live on the East Coast of Scotland about 1hrs drive South from Inverness. The beaches up here are incredible along the Moray Firth. Cromarty and Chanory point well worth a visit to see the Dolphins 🐬. Inverness a great city , lots to see and so. Nice seeing some original members on here, lake District weekend soooo long ago down to earth, hope your keeping well. Enjoy your trip to beautiful Scotland.
ADAlly & Dave on 12/08/23 @ 17:56Hello Ally, I thought it was you but wasn’t a 100% yes long time ago Oct 2010 !! 🤪 it was a great weekend for me. I am actually coming up with another from that weekend, we are walking from Forth William - Inverness.
on 13/08/23 @ 7:43Really looking forward to it. Sounds like you are enjoying life.
Hello John, thank you for the info we will check this out before we go, it’s sad but I can’t wait.
downtoearth65 on 13/08/23 @ 7:47Seems such a long time ago downtoearth but a great weekend and made so many lasting friendship and a lovely hubby!! Glad you are still in touch with original members. Have a lovely walk and look forward to the pictures x
ADAlly & Dave on 13/08/23 @ 13:10Train to Fort William and train from Inverness. Sleepers go direct from/to Euston to both but very expensive. Fly to Glasgow then train? Or fly to/from Inverness eg from/to Luton. I paid £48 return Inv-Luton in April.
SplashRollAndPlod on 22/08/23 @ 0:31I’ve also cycled the Great Glen Way Fort W to Inv, last summer. Very good hostel at Invergarry.
Happy to assist in any way.
Cliff
Hello Cliff, thank you, I was hoping to get the train, my friend has decided she wants to drive, so I’ll go with the flow, I am really looking forward to the trip, we are going to do the walk over 7 days
downtoearth65 on 23/08/23 @ 21:21Morag’s Lodge in Fort Augustus is ok too - it’s a hostel really. But maybe you’ll be camping?
SplashRollAndPlod on 26/08/23 @ 19:38downtoearth65: Glad to see you back on here C 👍
RoRourky on 05/11/23 @ 16:28Rourky: How you doing? Hope you are well. Long time, not done much for a while, my whole life/world has been mad! I did do the great glen in September it nearly killed me 😟 I went with Amanda, do you remember her? I have been in contact with Ali, think she has retired now, have you heard from any of that group? I still hear from Shaun, Shani, once in a blue moon. Anyway best not put my whole life here for the world. Maybe we should organise a reunion for the 2010 lot! 😀
downtoearth65 on 05/11/23 @ 18:06Its great to hear so many of us are still in touch. I often look back at the photo of the first ever OD xmas bash we organised in Llanberis. 30+ members who hardly knew each other and went on to become good friends and have loads of adventures all over the country. Good to see you back. I dont do as much now as knees are shot, but ya Scottish trip sounds a blast. Reunion sounds a plan.
RoRourky on 18/09/24 @ 15:13Reunion, When, Where etc
downtoearth65 on 18/09/24 @ 19:41I don't think I have that photo, maybe we should take a look at the photo name, shame and invite/set up the Reunion?
downtoearth65: posted here yesterday. Must have read your mind.
