I'm around from 10th January to 16th January willing to lead some walks in the Keswick area, and make use of buses to allow one way hikes further afield.
Just putting up some ideas to see if people are interested at this time of year. Shorter walks due to limited daylight hours, and these may require use of crampons or microspikes and ice axe should we get much snow (- for easy routes up Skiddaw and Helvellyn).
Suggested routes
- bus up to Rosthwaite, walk to Stonethwaite Bridge, steep ascent to Dock Tarn through woods, over top to Watendlath, along hanging valley to descend by Lodore falls at High Lodore, back to Keswick round lake shore.
- bus to Thirlmere dam end, climb High Rigg, Low Rigg, to Naddle Bridge, Castlerigg Stone Circle, Castlerigg Farm, path back down to Keswick
- various routes over and around Latrigg, Brundholme Woods, and along railway if very bad weather! Community cafe at Threlkeld.
- bus to Wythburn Chapel, ascent to Helvellyn. Descend steep rocky path to road or return on same route, easier on knees! Bus back to Keswick.
- Skiddaw possible any day. Amazing views to back of Skiddaw if snowy and sunny day!!
- bus to Braithwaite, Grizedale Pike, Hope Gill Head, Sand Hill, then descend to Coledale Beck and Braithwaite, or if time and good weather continue round Coledale Horseshoe.
- bus to Ambleside, various hikes.
- classic round Derwentwater walk.
- round Catbells, Newlands valley walks.
There's no end of possibilities and choices depend on the weather and participants involved.
Please can you indicate if interested and which dates suit best. If sufficient interest I'll provide more detailed plans.
Bad weather and evenings... Loads of tea shops, pubs, theatre, cinema, etc in Keswick. Even the town park walks are interesting! Can provide board games and cards for wet dark afternoon in a pub!!

I can certainly make it for some if not all of the time
An interesting invitation, I cannot do January as its too far for a day trip for me (RT of 200 miles) and my Van is off the road till the 1st of February. So....if your considering similar in February I would be interested and I would use the Keswick area CCC sites for the stay. Being February it would need some flexibility on dates to match the weather. Like the approach of using the buses and that's going into my plan for several Lakes visits next year. I found this earlier this year but did not get to make use of it, https://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/visiting/getting-to-the-lake-district/wasdale-shuttlebus, I have this in next years plan and it stops close to campsites with Van access
waLezWLezW: all noted! Dates at present are flexible. Just seeing how much interest there is at the moment. Buses are great to enable easy access and no parking problems to various parts of the Lakes. I use them a lot whilst my car stays on the drive!
I will definately be there for some of those dates.
trtrekkieWill let you know.
Thanks for putting this on. Great idea.
I'll firm up on some walk options shortly after New Year.
I might need Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th for Turn round after my canaries walking trip but could be up for a lakes fix during the week
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: great! I'll post some more definite dates and routes in the New Year! 😀
I’ve pencilled in 13-15th in my diary
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: 👍
Booked an air b and b arriving 13th and leaving 15th and could do a walk on all 3 days although a location east side of Keswick ie on my route in , would help timings but not essential
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: I've put together planned hikes for this week. If you'd prefer a certain rote when you're here I can possibly alter! Wednesday morning I'm not around but have added half day hike in north eastern lakes which might suit your return journey?
Would be nice if I could get up to Cumbria. :-)
KeKestrel7Would probably book Fell View Lodge. Either travelling up early this week to catch the good weather or early next week... :-)
Kestrel7: hope you make it up here! Weather is awful right now!! Slushy snow and rain... I was hoping for a snowy day on the fells in sunshine this winter!
I'd like to join the walks Fri - Mon and the evening talks. They l look brilliant. Look forward to meeting. Arr CCC Keswick Thurs pm.
CMChris MurisCan't get up this week as I am needed here to help look after a poorly grandchild.
KeKestrel7Was hoping to arrive a few days early to make full use of the excellent weather in the lakes. Perhaps early next week. John
Chris Muris: see you tmrw 9.30am outside Booths in Keswick!! 😀
on 09/01/25 @ 19:23Kestrel7: John, sorry you can't join us. It is spectacular up here right now with the snowy fells but it is very cold. The weather is brilliant with clear sunny days and blue sky!!
Do let me know if you can join us later next week.
